Admin Plugins
These are a group of plugins that add functionality to your administration panel.
- Database Backup
- My Page Order moving pages around so they fit.
- Protected pages how I lock down the site.
- Search and Replace great if you want to change affiliate links etc
- Spam Karma a great alternative to Akismet
- Feedburner - Important for statistics.
- Extended Editor - only if you really want to do tables and a lot of different formatting.
1. Database Backup - Download - (16K)
Access: manage/admin
Installation
Extract wp-db-backup.php, (not the whole folder) upload it into /wp-content/plugins/ and activate it under the Plugins menu.
Use
- Click the Manage menu in your WordPress admin area.
- Click the Backup sub-menu.
- The plugin will look for other tables in the same database. You may elect to include other tables in the backup.
** NOTE ** Including other tables in your backup may substantially increase the size of the backup file!
This may prevent you from emailing the backup file because it’s too big. - Select how you’d like the backup to be delivered:
- Save to server : this will create a file in /wp-content/backup-*/ for you to retreive later
- Download to your computer (recomended into your blog folder under the your blog name.): this will send the backup file to your browser to be downloaded
- Email : this will email the backup file to the address you specify
- Click “Backup!” and your database backup will be delivered to you.
The filename of the backup file will be of the formDB_prefix_date.sql
- DB = the name of your WordPress database, as defined in wp-config.php
- prefix = the table prefix for this WordPress blog, as defined in wp-config.php
- date = CCYYmmdd_B format: 20050711_039
- the “B” is the internet “Swatch” time.

When having the database backup emailed or sent to your browser for immediate download, the backup file will be deleted from the server when the transfer is finished. Only if you select delivery method “Save to server” will the backup file remain on your server.

Your database backup contains sensitive information and should not be left on the server for any extended period of time. This plugin provides the “Save to server” delivery method only as a convenience. I cannot accept any responsibility if other people obtain your backup file.

2. My Page Order - Download - (2k)
Access: manager/My Page Order
I personally love this one especially on this blog as it has so many pages. If a page gets put in the wrong place I can simply reorder its position. Most new themes works straight out of the box. It also manages sub pages which is great. Plus it is an Ajax plugin do just a matter of drag and drop.
The Wordpress page order doesn’t automatically increment when you start a new page and it is a major pain to insert a page where you want it. Got a new page you want to insert at the top of 25 other pages? Have fun incrementing the order on 25 pages (unless it accepts a negative number which is just another bad idea).
This plugin gives you a simple interface that allows you to arrange the order of your static pages. It uses and sets the same field in the database as WP does so if you have set an order before it will be preserved.
Installation instructions:
- Extract zipped files
- Upload mypageorder.php to /wp-content/plugins/ on your server.
- Activate the My Page Order plugin on the Plugins menu.
- Plugin tab appears under the Manage menu, give the pages an initial order.
- If you are using widgets then just make sure the “Page” widget is set to order by “Page order”. That’s it.
- Make sure your templates have the correct sort parameter, see below.
Sort attribute
In your templates (accessible through the theme editor or downloading the file off the server) there might be several places your list of pages gets outputted. To use your sort order each instance must have the sort column argument set like the following:
wp_list_pages(’sort_column=menu_order’);
That’s it. Out of the box everything is there to make the manual ordering happen, it just needs a better interface to make it less time consuming for the WP user to manage and my plugin is really just a stopgap measure until something better gets built into the WP release.
3 . Protected pages - Download - (9kb)

Ok this plugin is worth its weight in gold and there is virtually no documentation any were on it. The goal was to make wordpress a completely locked down membership site and while there are a few plugins around that do this they work mainly on posts and very few work on pages. The other thing is you can lock them all down or none. This plugin allows you to choose the pages you want to lock down
When I first got it the silly thing didn’t work and this is the case with a lot of plugin developers, they just don’t go that extra mile to set it up for us novices so I got my programmers onto it and now it works a treat.
Installation is the same as all the other plugins, load to your plugin directory and activate in the plugin menu in admin. It will then fetch your pages and list them so you can choose which ones to make public and which ones to make private.
4. Search and Replace- Download - (2k)
Access: manage/Search and Replace
I use search and replace for some affiliate links. So say I provide a feed for my affiliates they can load this plugin and simply search for my affiliate code and replace it with theirs.
It is uses SQL replace so it’s fast but not very flexible.
Just download the zip, extract the searchandreplace.php file and place it in your wp-content/plugins and then in the wp-admin plugin interface active it.
You will then have a new panel in your “Manage” section called “Search and Replace”.
5. Spam Karma - Download - (67k)
Access: options Spam Karma
There are two ways you can combat spam comments etc. One is the built in Akismet which is very good or the other is spam Karma which is much more configurable.
a. Overview
Spam Karma 2 (SK2) is an anti-spam plugin for the WordPress blogging platform. It is meant to stop all forms of automated Blog spam effortlessly, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible to regular commenters. Spam Karma 2 is the proud successor to Spam Karma, with whom it shares most of the development ideas, but absolutely none of the code
b. Installation
Install is the easiest ever:
- download the archive
- unzip and drop the whole SK2 folder, as is, in your
pluginsdirectory. - Enable the plugin in the WP Admin >> Plugins section.
- Browse to WP Admin >> Manage >> Spam Karma 2.
c. Configuration
Just go through and choose your settings. I usually leave them at default. Make sure you run the compatibility check at the bottom of the systems page. If you start getting to much spam you can just upgrade the security functions.
6. Feedburner - Download - 6 (kb)Before you go any further go register for a Feedburner account and as soon as your blog is set up be sure to load this plugin and get your feedburner RSS feed set up. http://www.feedburner.com
For the best results using FeedBurner with your self-hosted WordPress site, we recommend the FeedBurner FeedSmith plugin (originally authored by the awesome Steve Smith). The plugin will detect all ways to access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2.php, etc.), and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. It will forward for your main posts feed, and optionally your main comments feed as well.
- Download the plugin and then follow the instructions below to begin forwarding all WordPress feed traffic to your FeedBurner feed.
Installation
- Copy the plugin file, FeedBurner_FeedSmith_Plugin.php into your default WordPress plugin directory, wp-content/plugins/ .
- Activate the plugin by logging into your WordPress administration area, clicking Plugins, then clicking Activate at the end of the “FeedBurner FeedSmith” row.
- In the WordPress administration area, begin the configuration by clicking Options and then the FeedBurner FeedSmith sub-option.
- Follow the links to create your FeedBurner feeds, or if they already exist, simply fill in their URLs in the boxes provided.NOTE: If you currently use the old, 2005-vintage version of the Ordered List FeedBurner plugin that generates a FeedBurner-specific URL (an example: www.yoursite.com/feedburner_838196/), that URL is no longer available or necessary. You will have to reset your FeedBurner feed’s Original Feed address to now use your standard blog feed address. Additionally, you should examine any .htaccess files that control access to your WordPress installation’s content and remove any existing references that forward or redirect your feeds, as these references will no longer be necessary.
- Verify your URLs in the text entry fields, and click Save.
- Now, all of your WordPress feed traffic should be redirected to FeedBurner.
Deactivation
To deactivate automatic forwarding of your feed traffic to FeedBurner, deactivate the plugin via the Plugins section of your WordPress Administration control panel.
For WordPress, we recommend the following set of services:
- Browser-Friendly Burner. It makes your feed easy to view and subscribe to when viewed in a web browser.
- Podcasting with WordPress? Then you should use SmartCast™. It will ensure maximum compatibility for your WordPress podcast feed. (Be sure to check your feed settings if you plan to podcast with WordPress.)
Verifying WordPress feed settings for podcasting
Are you using WordPress for podcasting? If so, it’s important to know that newer versions of WordPress will automatically convert linked MP3 files to RSS enclosures, but using our SmartCast™ service will guarantee maximum compatibility and reliability for your podcast. Either way, you will need to make sure you’re publishing a “full text” feed so your links make it into the RSS feed. Here’s how to verify your original WordPress site feed’s format unzip and upload the file into your wp-content/plugins/ directory. Activate the plugin on your Admin Panel->Plugin Management page

Introduction
This plugin Replaces the default Wordpress editor with FCKeditor 2.4.3.
FCKEditor is a full feature web based WYSIWYG html editor,it’s lightweight and is compatible with most internet browsers which include: IE 5.5+ (Windows), Firefox 1.0+, Mozilla 1.3+ and Netscape 7+.
