The Case for Blogging

In January I was sitting around with some friends over dinner discussing finances. David had just inherited $10,000 dollars and we were discussing the best way to Invest the money.
One said invest in a long term deposit, another said get some shares and so the discussion went on as I sat back and listened quietly.
I must say here that all my friends have jobs and are quite conservative.
Finally the conversation got around to me and so I thought for a minute. I think they all knew what I was going to say.
10 thousand dollars is not a lot of money so lets look at what each of the options offer. I whipped out my laptop and found the going rate for the different options. If you were really lucky you could get 7% on a term deposit. Managed share portfolio maybe a few percent more.
I said this is what would do. Take $4000 and put it in a term deposit, $4000 and invest it in a share portfolio unless you know what you are doing and then I would invest directly in shares.
I would take the other $2000 and set up a small business account and invest it in myself and set up a blog and start sharing some of the things I am passionate about. Drive some traffic to the site and after a while take what I have shared and create a product.
Well David did this and as at June 30th here are the results. He managed to get a term deposit at 5.5% which has neted him the grad total of 220 dollars. His managed fund has actually not performed very well yet but the fund manager assures him it will. Total income to date nothing.
The blogging course he bought and all the other expenses such as domain names and hosting cost him $1500. Income from advertising and affiliate sales he has made $800. He has also has set up a few blogs for others for a total of $500 and just released his first ebook for which he has made 4 sales at $37 dollars. Grand total of 1448.
The added bonus is that his work has now asked him to set up a blog for them and offered him commission on any leads he generates for the company which could represent many thousands of dollars. His investment in himself has not only given him a much better return but he also has a new skill set to leverage off.
David is not an isolated case and I started off exactly the same way but with static web pages which is a lot harder. Learning how to set up blogs is quite easy and you can make them look very professional with little or no previous experience. While I cannot guarantee the success that David has had I can guarantee that you will have a lot of fun and develop a skill that is in high demand in the marketplace today.
